Prickly, Pure Goodness


This prickly tropical fruit is known to have a strong flavor and even stronger health benefits. Soursops have a tropical aroma with a flavor that is reminiscent of pineapple, strawberry, coconut, and banana. The taste is compared to pineapple or strawberry with a creamy texture. They grow on evergreen trees that reach up to 9 meters tall with large, glossy, green leaves. The fruit ranges from oval to heart shaped and is covered in small, spiny protrusions. As the fruit matures, the dark green, leathery skin becomes a pale green and will yield to slight pressure. The inner pulp is cream-colored and separates easily into fibrous, juicy segments that contain black seeds. Soursop goes by many named internationally, including guanabana, paw-paw, sirsak, and graviola.

  1. Soursops are most often eaten raw, either scooped straight from the skin or as a puree.
  2. Often made into a sweet beverage.
  3. The juice can be used to make ice creams, sorbets, mousse, or custards; it also makes a nice cocktail when mixed with alcohol.

Store unripe soursops at room temperature for a few days. Once ripe (soft), store in the refrigerator for up to 2 days or freeze if needed.
